Without having read the thesis, I am all for plenty of water.  The usual recomendation is 2 quarts/day (8-8 oz glasses), I try for three quarts, especially when I'm sticking to the "Protein Power" plan.  Water is not as important if you're doing "cabbage soup", but you still need something to soften the stool.

Some folks don't count tea, coffee or alcoholic beverages, but I do - of course, if you down a 50ml shot of 80 proof (40% alcohol) Scotch, only 60% (30 ml) is water, if you're splitting hairs. :D

The downside of this much water is the risk of flushing electrolytes and other essential salts - if your urine is colorless, you probably have drunk all the water you need for a few hours.

People can die of drinking too much water, as an unfortunate woman did in a Boston Marathon.
Moderation in all things.

General Jack D. Ripper had this covered with his theories on purity of essence, which would lead to peace on earth.

It was that P.O.E. thing.

I asked for and received the 40th anniversary commemorative edition DVD of "Dr. Strangelove" for Christmas. Wonderful stuff. It's just great seeing how many roles Peter Sellars played.

Freakin' hilarious stuff.

What do I think?

I think that whenever somebody finds one thing that cures or prevents:

"asthma, allergies, arthritis, angina, migraine headaches, hypertension, raised cholesterol, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, depression, and diabetes in the elderly"... like this guy has claimed...

...then they are probably wrong.

I have read that the 8 glasses of water thing has never had any foundation in basic research...that it's kind of a medical "urban myth" or something.

I, too, have heard that too much water is tough on the kidneys, which have to process all that extra hydration.

I'd like to see an unbiased summary of what's really known about how much water you need.

"General Jack D. Ripper had this covered with his theories on purity of essence, which would lead to peace on earth."

Was he the one who thought that the fluoridation of American body fluids was a Commie plot ?

General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Lord, Jack.

General Jack D. Ripper: You know when fluoridation first began?

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I... no, no. I don't, Jack.

General Jack D. Ripper: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. Nineteen forty-six, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Uh, Jack, Jack, listen, tell me, tell me, Jack. When did you first... become... well, develop this theory?

General Jack D. Ripper: Well, I, uh... I... I... first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love.

    Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.

General Jack D. Ripper: Yes, a uh, a profound sense of fatigue... a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I... I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence.

    Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.

General Jack D. Ripper: I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake.

    Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No.

General Jack D. Ripper: But I... I do deny them my essence.

8 - 8o z glasses is old news and practically an old wive's tale.

Water is essential to the function of the human body but each person's demand is DRAMATICALLY different based on their activity level, metabolism, kidney function, eating habits, caffeine intake, etc...

The guideline of "if your urine is nearly clear you've probably had enough water for a while" given above is about as accurate as any person can get.  After a while of feeding yourself water on a regular basis you develop a "sense" for when you need more and when you've had enough... but you'll never reach that sense until you've hydrated yourself thoroughly for at least a week or two.

Peeing every hour or two for an otherwise healthy person is also an indication... enough... maybe a bit too much.

Being that I'm a bit of a weight-lifting health enthusiast I've done a lot of independent study on this subject.  Having "enough" water fuels your body's ability to repair itself (and in my case, build extra muscle) and many other essential functions.

If you drink coffee, drink extra water... caffeine dehydrates you.  Water is good, but there is such a thing as too much.

;)

Just my $0.02 to confirm most of what's been said already above.

I agree.  I've also done extensive research and been in contact with others who have done the same.  There isn't any concrete science that says 8-8 ounce glasses a day of whater, it's a myth.

Does it?

You'd almost think that coffee doesn't have water in it?

See the link in my post above.

Don't even need to read it to know that.
