Per CrazyOnTap (the definitive news aggregator for some of us  ::) ) - he passed yesterday, October 12, 2011.

He was the co-inventor of Unix and the C language. 

"Ritchie" was the "R" of the infamous and slim K&R C Programming Language text.

He was yet another of the old school programmers who exemplified the academic, knowledge-sharing leanings of computer programming that most of the industry spits on today.
