Rexx Is now Open Source and Free
« on: October 21, 2004, 01:08:30 pm »

One of the best computer languages of all time.

At least it won't die.

=====

As part of IBM's continued support of the Open Source community, Object REXX has been provided by IBM to the REXX Language Association (RexxLA). The code is now available under an open source project from RexxLA under Common Public License (CPL) V1.

I used Rexx as recently as three years ago. It's an excellent language. I learned it back in my OS/2 days. There was a Visual Rexx that got some traction for a while. I also think I recall a Rexx compiler for MVS. I wonder if anyone ever mde a PC-usable Rexx compiler?

If I were to utter the name "Rexx" nowadays, I would be carted off to the "unemployable old geezer's home" amid cries of "who's gonna support it?".

Too bad, as it was extremely useful. But then OS/2 was a wonderful OS. Rexx and OS/2 - two great examples of better moustraps that didn't succeed. It's a shame.

Until last week I  was working on a Rexx application. It ran on VM -- the first platform that supported Rexx.

There have been Rexx compilers for VM and MVS for many years.

There are many free Rexx interpreters available, for a wide variety of operating systems.  They include--

Regina     -- all operating systems  (see www.rexxla.org)
BRexx      -- esp good for small systems,
                  runs native on  Windows CE
Rexx/imc  -- optimized for Linux/Unix/BSD
Reginald   -- Regina extended and optimized for
                  Windows (includes many tools)
Object Rexx -- as in your post
roo!            -- a competing object-oriented Rexx
r4               -- another Rexx for Windows plus tools
NetRexx      -- Rexx for the Java environment (JVM)
Rexx for Palm OS -- program your Palm Pilot w/ Rexx

Do a "google" on any of these interpreter names to download the products.  There are many dozens of interfaces and tools that work with these products.

50% of Rexx use is in the USA, 10% in the UK, 40% in many other countries.

Since going open source and gaining an ANSI standard....
Rexx is neither a "mainframe language" nor is it dead!

Happy scripting!
