Reactions to PDF Cube Free
« on: August 17, 2011, 08:49:07 am »
Do any of you have PDF Cube Free installed?

It installs as a virtual printer, and claims to be able to create PDF format files from Word, Excel, Access reports, etc. etc.  It's free.

Have any of you used it?  Does it work?  Is it easy?  Is it a cover for any malware?

We've discussed PDFCreator in the past here. It is entirely open source, is free of malware, and is quite easy to use. It does exactly what you're saying - it installs and looks like a Windows printer device and produces PDFs as the "printout."

I have used it constantly for almost 10 years. For example, I use it to make a soft copy of client invoices.

There are literally hundreds of those drivers out there. I guess there is some MIT/BSD code out there that people take, compile and try to sell for $15.

Not everyone knows there are free versions available and this kind of utility have VERY wide appeal.

Personally I found that the free driver from:

Works better than others I have tried. Can't remember exactly what was the feature but it did something that the others could not.

Not saying that this is absolutely the best since I have not done testing lately.

I second PDF Creator. Its open source and I have been using it for years. It works fine and its a great alternative to the licensed version from Adobe.

Under some conditions PDFCreator will produce very bloated PDFs that do not correspond to the original source size. Such as a single page from Word that results in a 500K PDF file (an entire 400 page e-book I bought is only 1.3 megabytes in size so that indicates that bloat can be a problem with PDFCreator.)

I've been using doPDF, a freebie.  I haven't really tried to break it, but it has always produced PDFs that look exactly like docs printed on the printer.  Using mainly Word with some Excel.  Installation was automatic.

No "inflation" issues as The Gorn reports.
