It's not false, and it's not modesty.
I was good at what I did. Real good. No bones about it.
I was even good enough at finding work until about 2001. Sometimes I used brokers, sometimes I didn't. I got a few repeat jobs by wait till the non compete expired, and just calling up.
But I wasn't good enough to survive the market for my niche in the last few years. Especially when my contacts, the people who knew I was good, started getting fired themselves.
And I wasn't good enough to jump from one niche to another in that time frame. Basically, when you jump from one niche to another, you don't have the new niche on your resume.
I'm not saying this to be humble. Not a bit of it. I just don't want to be in the awkward position of pretending to be an IT person when I'm not. Pretense is not my style.
