The argument is that we have become unbelievably wealthy through globalization, why would we want Congress to mess that up?
The problem with that argument is that it is unbelievably parochial to think that just because the Forbes reader in Manhatten has gotten their millions in bonus this year, the rest of the country has benefited from their actions. Globalization has emptied the middle class by removing the barriers between us and lower wages paid elsewhere. Because enough people have seen that they have not benefited, Congress acts to try to benefit those upset voters.
Unfortunately, Congress always does the wrong thing. In this case, they are focussed on jobs. It is far more important to focus on allowing people to make their own jobs. Throughout history, the real basis of the middle class is not jobs, but business creation. The middle class was made up of people who had their own businesses.
