I use them as leads for consulting.
It gives me an idea of which companies are expanding their budget.

The problem is they are overrun with fake ads by borks but if you have the patience to go looking for a few nuggets hidden in a mass of waste these two will work.

Flipdog used to be an excellent site because it consisted of listings scanned from actual company websites however they have since been swallowed by monster.

Monster works well for me.
Posting a resume there, make it visible.
Lots of people visit.
I've gotten lots of leads.
I've even gotten jobs from some of those leads.

They don't

I have rarely received a contact from an "end user" (company looking to hire their own technology person) from job board listings and resumes. The bulk of the responses from job board resume postings are recruiters and so called "consulting" (actually body) shops.

I think in low-demand regions as Orlando sounds like, you need to watch the job listings carefully yourself, and also make first contact with companies you'd like to work for which may not be advertising.

I have used D*ce, M*nster, NetT*mps, and various government job boards like usajobs and ones run by the state (Washington for example).

In the past 8 plus years I think I have gotten two or three interviews and *one* job from the boards.  That was for a 1099 @$15  an hour desktop rollout with a 42 mile commute to "Banga-rola."

I tend to periodically get bullsh*t from my alias at m*nster.com.  Usually the Citib*nk overpriced insurance agent scam or some borker on the coast looking for someone to fill their $12 an hour frankenjob for 2-3 months.

If you update your resume regularly (even if its just forward space / backspace / save) you'll get noticed.

I'm not a programmer. Just a "lowly" system builder, o/s and hardware guy.  Your mileage may be much better .. especially if you "know everything and cost nothing". ;)

craigslist looks like it might be promising

If you're near a big city.  It has a more personal feel to it than the big job boards.

Avoid Agencies
« Reply #6 on: January 12, 2006, 11:50:56 pm »
Above all, avoid agencies of any kind unless you personally know someone there. They have been a complete waste of time and money for me. I have landed several gigs from the big boards, but never through an agency.

I've been on Craigslist for a while now, and I haven't seen ANYTHING from it. Is there a trick to that I should know about?

I agree, you will not find high paying gigs on Craigslist.  If you don't mind getting fleeced on the rate, you will get some bites.

My experience....
« Reply #10 on: September 12, 2006, 09:30:52 pm »
dyce-dot-com :   Never had any luck contacting anyone there. Sent out thousands of resumes over the years. Not once successful result. However, got about 3-4 gigs out of being contacted about my posted resume.

Moonsterbird-dot-com:   Got a gig once. Very low pay (under 40 grand per year in a very expensive metro area), but then desperation was sinking in, and it was either that, or working at the gas station, or something else horrible. Given the choices, I was pleased, which is awful in itself.

I haven't updated my resume since I know it will cause an avalanche of worthless calls and emails, terrible W2 rates, useless gigs, SOS (Same Olde Shyte)

There are some newer boards popping up that have been started by techies.

jobs.codebetter.com
jobs.joelonsoftware.com
hiddennetwork.com/
jobs.37signals.com/

I haven't seen anything in my geographical area, but there seems to be a LOT of quality FTE and contract positions.

My main source of jobs has been Monster for the last 6 years.

Most job boards are owned and run by body shops.  Most jobs posted are phony, and you know that's the case when a "job" sits there like an open PO for months.  It's phony, and there's no law preventing this.

There are no truth in advertising laws for job boards - hence - they are very unreliable and there's very little actual work out there.

It's been said the difference between a whore and a bork is  there's some things a whore won't do.  :lol

The days of high paying contracts are over.  The Law of Supply and Demand has been circumvented, as was the intent, by the introduction of non-immigrant/temporary work visas (H-1B, L1, etc.).

Alan Greenspan has been all for cheap labor and has promoted it when he stated "Our skilled wages are higher than anywhere in the world," he said. "If we open up a significant window for skilled workers, that would suppress the
skilled-wage level and end the concentration of income
."

What he's saying that flooding the market with cheap labor will bring down labor costs.

Borks I talk to now refuse to pay per diem.  What's worse is they want to pay as little as $45.00 per hour all inclusive, and that's at a 1099 or c-2-c rate.  So you get hit with tons of expenses including the full share of SS and Medicare.  You'd be better off selling hardware at Home Depot and getting benefits, which we all know contractors don't get.

1.5 MILLION cheap labor NIVs have flooded the market and rates are dropping like stones.  And that doesn't even factor in all the jobs lost due to oursourcing.
