"Top Fifty Companies in Chicago with Career search links"
« on: September 15, 2008, 07:59:09 pm »

I pulled this list off someone's website. I cannot vouch for it's accuracy. I know a few companies on here are H**1B hellholes or just a sh*tty place to work. I blasted through the list checking each company for I/T jobs that I am qualified to do. About 10 had openings. Double checking when I go back to create a profile for those. A few of them also used third party websites. One used Careerdestroyer so I will never apply there.

*What these asterixes represent is for is up to you to decipher. Most of the crap I received from that job portal has been spam, e.g. income opportunities.  I suspect being a client and having access to the candidate database has a very low threshold of what employment is.   I have complained to them but the flow of crap continued.  My theory is their reaction is something like "We are shocked that this is going on here" and ding the culprits but do zero policing or vetting up front.  Or these jokers simply change their name.

Another thing is that it is nearly impossible to kill a profile once you've created it.  The method is buried.  I think my fix was to use a fake email address so if the "zombie profile" sends out messages then they go nowhere before deletion.  If I was really annoyed I would have used one of their email contacts.

Mind you, I updated my profiles on monster and hotjobs and got the same form letter insurance selling spam from both of them but at least they occasionally sent something legit... I think.

I also got spam from Careerbuilder.  But I got spam from all the job boards.  I found them most useful if I just used them to search for jobs on a regular basis.  Sometimes I even saw postings from the hiring company itself, without an intermediary.

In fact, I found both my current and previous (temp) jobs on Careerbuilder (unfortunately, both were through recruiters).  So for me it was a gold mine.  Well, maybe a tin mine.

When you have a profile on CB, even when you receive no applicable leads because there is little demand for one's skills, you tend to receive a blizzard of spam.

When I've placed resumes on CB, I was contacted several times by "Primerica" (financial MLM) "fronts". They leave messages or tell you that they represent "a company that is staffing management positions in your city." They NEVER want to tell you on the phone WTF it is that they represent; the last time I got their call I humiliated the person who called me by telling them exactly what I thought of MLM and of their tactics.

Plus, lots of BS contacts from scab labor offshore type agencies apparently looking to dangle a promise of a job in front of stupid white guys like me in exchange for rate information.

I can't fault a job board for reflecting the market demand. What I can fault them for is being a locus of deceptive activity.

I currently have my profile on CB but it's not visible.  When it was visible, last year, I got about 2-3 messages per day.  Is this comparable to what you were seeing?  Most of them seemed legitimate.  I guess I just didn't pay any attention to anything which looked off, I didn't notice anything like MLM schemes.  Not that I don't believe you - it doesn't surprise me.  What does surprise me is pointing out CB in particular.  I would imagine this kind of spam would be difficult to filter out for any job board, Dice or Monster etc.

The legitimate ads I got from CB were most often not suitable; wrong skill list.  I assumed they were spamming based on keyword.  ("Send this ad to everyone having keyword 'Java'").  Still, like I said, I did get good job ads. I used CB almost entirely, never bothered with updating my profile on Monster or Dice since I figured there'd be a huge amount of overlap. I did use some other services: jobcircle and jobster.

I got a nibble from a jobcircle ad for a contract position, but later I saw the same ad on lots of other job boards.

Maybe I am adding a bit of hyperbole but...
« Reply #7 on: September 18, 2008, 12:56:56 pm »
I just recalled getting really bad MLM type spam from them. Obvious to me that they were scams but seemingly not to their site.

It may have been the individual cruddiness and not the total number.  I still have my hostile responses to spammers from the other boards but not theirs.

Having an online profile that cannot be deleted easily just added aggravation on top of the problem.

Of course when the keywords and/or job requirements are different then experiences will vary.  I am not thrilled with the other sites either.
