And other costs
« Reply #1 on: December 28, 2009, 11:07:58 am »

One of the costs of globalization has been the polluting of our skies and water. I have suspicions that the polluting of the oceans is causing a number of other problems that we have yet to fully realize.

Another issue has to be the cost of transportation. When oil was at $10/barrel, the transportation costs were minimal. When it hit $140/barrel, transportation costs became a significant part of the equation.

I don't know that I really buy 'deglobalisation'.

I think that all that has been demonstrated in the past year is that the global economy has become less dependent on the old industrial economies of the Western world.  European and US banks tanked (a crisis of their own making), but Asian banks stayed sound.  Plus China's current insatiable demand for energy and minerals helped keep Oz out of recession this past year.  Western Australia is about to become a global natural gas hub, with assured exports for decades to come.  No, I just don't buy 'deglobalisation'.
