Windows Update performs Update -- even when set to Download-only

I've always had my Windows Update settings clicked on "DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME, BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM."

But today Windows did a download, then the Update, automatically installing it without my say-so.

I thought maybe I was mistaken about the settings, but I checked and I was not.  Moreover, this is the 2nd time this has happened!  So I'm pretty sure I'm not mistaken here.

Has anyone else experienced this?  Seems rather outrageous that WU ignores your settings and does what it wants!

Since the install was automatic / silent, of course I have no idea what it installed. Maybe Windows does this automatic install for the data updates for the Malicious Software Removal Tool?  (I'm just guessing here).  Still, that's not right. It should respect my settings.

Maybe it's part of the flakiness problem I described in my earlier post about Windows Update.

I don't get the Malicious Software Tool updates automatically.  Not sure if I set it that way or not, but I always do it manually.   I think I'll go back and look now to see if I can make it automatic.

Thanks, I.D., for the feedback.

I'm considering just turning off Windows Updates altogether.  This is an old XP system and the chance for damaging it outweighs the benefits of the updates (I think).
