Virtual Printer Software
« on: June 19, 2011, 07:42:58 am »
Something (probably TurboTax) installed a virtual printer program called PDF Complete, so that I get that as a choice when I print something.   I like it and may buy it after the demo period ends.  ($49)

Anyone have other virtual printer suggestions?

Before you buy it, do a search for free PDF printer drivers.  There are plenty of them out there.

Just one example is http://www.bullzip.com/products/pdf/info.php

I've been using PDFCreator for years.  Never had a problem

Thanks for the recommendations.  I saw PDFCreator somewhere.   I'll try them out.

Almost everyone who knows about this stuff uses PDFCreator. It is free GNU software and installs and is used very easily. I've used it for > five years. I sure wouldn't pay for the commercial stuff without trying the free stuff first.

The only issue I've  found is that PDFCreator can generate files from certain applications that are 20x larger than from others. IE, the same plain mostly text web content that results in a 50K file when printed from Internet Explorer can bloat to 400K when printed through Firefox, which is really odd.

One of my computers came with a PDF printer preinstalled.  I don't remember which one it was, but I might be able to look it up.  Defnitely check out the free ones.

I looked up the computer where a PDF printer came preinstalled.  The driver is called "Acrobat PDF Writer".  After searching the web, I guess that this driver is bundled with Acrobat, which you have to pay for.  Acrobat must have been bundled with one of the packages that originally came with this computer.

My version is some 10 years out of date.  For my purposes, I don't care.  It looks like backward compatibility is a big deal among the people who control the PDF format.  If so, it's just as well.

This may not be very helpful to the OP.  Sorry.
