Good (cheap) Windows 7 Backup solution
« on: April 01, 2011, 10:47:34 am »
I just got a new PC running Windows 7 (64bit) and found that my favorite backup program, Retrospect, doesn't work.  Before I invest $50 to upgrade to the current version, does anyone have a recommendation for another backup solution?

I want something that I can set up to automatically run an incremental backup every day.

TIA.

Acronis should do what you need. While others may not like it, I have found it to be reliable. I have actually restored an entire system and moved a system with Acronis backups. The basic backup for a workstation is about $80.

Comodo Backup - it is free

It can backup just about anything and even create an image of your disks, partitions, and MBR.  Comodo uses an incremental backup method by design and you can schedule the backup to run whenever you want.

I've been using it for a couple of months now - of course I don't have much to backup, but I do like to use it for imaging my computer.

Turns out Win 7 has a backup process built in.  I'm giving that a try.

BTW so far I am totally underwhelmed by Win 7.  I skipped Vista, but it looks like they moved (hid) everything that's in Win/XP).

In my opinion, Windows 7 is much better in many aspects to Windows XP.  The problem was that MS decided to do a paradigm shift based on partner and beta consumer input.  It's the marketing arm of MS that gets them into trouble:  Windows XP was the best OS they had at the time and it could have been improved with some minor tweaks and added functionality.

As for Windows Backup, it works just fine.   See my new post on the Windows 7 conversation

I did too, and I gave up on it and bought Acronis anyway.

What you will find is that Win 7 backup is hideously slow and inflexible. It does not do incremental or differential backups, which makes the most of storage media. Any backup with Win 7 backup will take longer than the same backup with other tools.

Frankly, it's barely capable junk.

I upgraded to the latest release of Retrospect, primarily  because it can access the older backup sets.

As I get more familiar with Windows 7 I'm beginning to  like it more (or maybe hate it less).  I think that for a brand new user things are laid out better than Windows Classic.

The Aero Snap & Shake features are kind of nice, but so far nothing has really wowed me.
