I was only offering to sleuth the data from her My Documents and Program Files trees and anyplace else, and copy them to DVDs. I needed to drag the PC home here in order to control the hard drive and have a work environment suitable to do this, I would not do it on site. So I was offering a lower tier service, not like recovery of actual broken HDDs.

Certainly. But the higher tiered services cost a crapload for even that recovery of data level...

Experiences just like that really set me in a very antagonistic mood for personal and home computing purchasers and reinforced my desire to do only B2B work. In fact, it extends to my copywriting, because I would really rather do copy for B2B than for B2C.

Why do you think I'm so cranky?

But I do filter out the idiots or people wanting a hack job for cheap and I was make a few hundred bucks here and there when I made an effort to call back clients and stuff.  I will go back to doing this part time when I get my home office license renewed...after I get a proper frickin' apartment that is... Soon. I hope.

I will basically *have to* freelance as my salary still blows and my living expenses will be going up a bit for the exchange of moving back to the city and the distance to work goes from 110 miles a week to 340...  (Attempting to get an apt within a mile of the commuter rail).

DH, the big advantage you have should you choose to do this is overall knowledge. You understand the customers and your technical support skills are second to none, from what I've seen.

I didn't know shit and my tech skills were seriously incomplete when I attempted a computer support business. I simply didn't realize what I didn't know.

Just price and position yourself defensively, don't take any shit from anyone, and you should do fine.

"Cranky" is beside the point - I think you've got a handle on this business format and you know the tech cold.
