Walking while you work
« on: April 03, 2008, 09:12:13 am »
(sung to the tune from Snow White).

Dr. James Levine, at the Mayo Clinic, is promoting the idea of walking on a treadmill while operating your workstation. He alleges that you'll burn 100 calories per hour, walking at 1 mph. Do that 8 hours a day, every working day, and you'll drop 50 pounds in a year (all other things being equal, of course).

Here is the doc-endorsed version from Steelcase... the WalkStation:

There is a convertible version on that site, too, where the desk lowers so you can sit at it.

An amateur implementation, with links:

Here's the doc's extreme version, a WalkStation-only staff office replete with a hockey target on the wall:

I'm intrigued. I'm stuck in my current campaign to drop weight, and its hard for me to work in exercise, particularly since there is no shower at my otherwise-splendid office. I have the treadmill already, at home; the amateur version might be easy enough for ultra-unhandy me.

I saw this doctor's theory on TV a while back. I didn't realize that you could actually buy a workstation to do that! I'm going to check that out.

Add a hotplate and a prayer rug and it's home.

Brad Feld uses a treadputer (photo on the site).   But then, he's a wealthy VC and can set up his office any way he wants.  I wonder how most companies would react to someone asking to install this kind of thing, even on their own dime.
