The dog ate my paycheck

I heard this commentary on the radio this morning.  It's humorous but brings up a good point.  As a freelancer, how would you handle this situation  without coming off as unprofessional?

Without mentioning the dog, I'd just say that the check as accidentally destroyed, and offer to cover any fees to stop payment on the original.
