Need idea for electrical switches for computer
« on: March 27, 2008, 04:39:47 pm »
I am finishing up the design on my new home, and am considering what type of electrical switches I should have for the computer area.

I want to be able to cold start my system by the flick of a switch.  I don't want to use any more of the stupid switch strip - everything will be plugged into a wall receptacle, like a civilized person would do.  Of course, I have to be able to switch everything off to do a cold reboot on the system, or perhaps the cable modem, etc.

I also figure that I should have some track lighting above the work area that I could switch off or on.  As I will have the audio visual entertainment around there, I will have a switch for all that as well.

I can't think of anything else I may need.  Any ideas?

I assume you are going to use a UPS?  If so, everything (except possibly the printer) would plug into the UPS which would plug into the wall outlet.  The UPS has a main switch which kills everything.  If you really want to get fancy, run  special separate circuits to where your panel is and put the UPS there.

Maybe you want to model your electrical setup on the way that office buildings are designed.

When I rented an office I was in one place that had UPS based wall receptacles. I think the wall sockets that were protected were orange, and they were in turn plugged into UPSs in a closet or maybe an equipment rack.

Of course you will have Cat5 (more likely Cat6.) Plan on lots of runs. Run extra lines; it is easy to repurpose network wiring for telephone or other uses.
