Moving heavy objects up and down stairs yourself
« on: November 23, 2011, 06:06:27 pm »
I don't have an immediate need for this, but sounds interesting and doable.   Since most of us on this board are getting up in years, trying to move couches up and down stairs may no longer be feasible.

This guy's a Leonardo da Vinci polymath for how-to techniques.

I really hope he finishes his piece on how to give cold eardrops to a cat. We actually could use that.  ;D

Yeah, now I'm curious about the Cat Cape.  Maybe Version 1 had too many problems and he gave up.

I had to move a very heavy desk from basement to my daughters room. This desk came in the walkout sliding glass door with two people carrying it.

In order to get it up the stairs I put it onto her skiis.  The tips worked to prevent it from 'diving' into the next step and it glided great with tips tethered together. Only catch was there was no stopping for a break. So I took it up to the mini-landing and stood it up, then laid down a towel onto the hardwood kitchen floor and tipped it to the right and out of stairwell.

Worked great.

Dh built a wine cellar in our basement*.  when we had to do the drywall, we had to carry each pair of sheets down the stairs, because the basement is fully underground with no walkout.  I could barely carry my end on flat ground, let alone down stairs, because of the weight and there's nothing to get a grip on.  Came up with what I thought was a hairbrained idea to run a truck tie-down strap under my bottom corner and carry it by the strap.  It worked beautifully.   Of course then later I saw (and remembered-duh) that appliance installers use that exact idea to carry heavy appliances around.

*its nothing pretentious, basically a walkin closet... With a wine chiller unit and shelves.  Looks great, though!

Yep we're very lucky so far.  Also now you probably understand why Dh is paranoid about losing our savings (to shady dealings like a greyhound resort  ;D ).  You also have a glimmer who will freak out more if we ever come to living under a bridge.  Lol

These work surprisingly well. I borrowed a set from a friend and was amazed.
