Google Maps Street View
« on: March 12, 2008, 01:03:43 am »
Anyone been using the "Street Level" view on Google Maps?

It's only in major metro areas so far, but it's still pretty amazing...

I used it back in October/November to get a look at Las Vegas before a trip I took out there.  The images used for the street view can be way out of date.  In the case of Las Vegas, they were very much out of date as there has been so much construction there that the street view and the reality of the city didn't look at all alike.  At least, that was the case for the Las Vegas Strip.

But it is a very cool tool, and very useful potentially.

Very cool - I missed that feature when A9.com went away.

I love the fact that you can tilt and look up and down too. I went into center-city Philadelphia in street view and went to a street corner and panned up to look up and the buildings, and then down. Pretty cool! You can almost see the truck that the camera is mounted on...

They have gotten most of my town.  They did my street and My house looks nice :) .  Can't read my license plate, but my truck was in the driveway.  It was done last summer.  Pretty cool.

The "birds eye" view feature in Live Maps. It's available in far more areas than the street level view in Google maps.

The street level view is neat but ultimately quite frustrating, because so little of the country has been photographed. But the birds eye view covers all cities and built up areas and a lot of rural areas.

In general, Live Maps has more detailed aerial photography than Google Maps does. In my area, there's a sharp demarcation where the resolution of the photography drops to  a pretty fuzzy level.
