Auto Body Work Quotes
« on: January 23, 2012, 07:48:28 am »
One of our cars was damaged and needs some body work.  We are not going through the insurance company to hold rates down.  When I get estimates they always ask if it is going through insurance or out of pocket.  Does this work like health insurance at all in that self pay rates are about triple what the insurance companies allow?  The quotes I'm getting seem about right for the damage and work to be done.  Nothing is cheap!

When I took out a couple of deer the guy told me that when they deal with an insurance company there are strict rules they have to follow. For example they must buy the parts from approved vendors, instead of visiting a junk yard.  Labor rates and hours are fixed.

He had a pretty cool app to work up the quote.  He key whacked my VIN and up popped a schematic of my car. He clicked on each section of the car and got a  list of all the parts,  He tagged each one "OK", "Repair", or "Replace".   When he was done it listed all the parts he had to get, the number of hours he was authorized to spend on the repair and even an estimate for the amount of paint.  He entered my policy number, clicked "Send" and within a few minutes had the authorization.  The quote was not an estimate. That was all he was allowed to charge me, unless he uncovered hidden damage, in which case he's have to run the app again so it could calculate a new quote.

That fits my experience too. With cash, they might be able to take some shortcuts or fix it "good enough", while with insurance they need to "do it right".

That reminds me of commercials promoting authorized dealer parts instead of cheap knock-offs. Sometimes the knock-off is good enough but other times the quality isn't there. I recall getting a blower replaced for the heater and it just didn't move as much air.

On the other hand, I've seen some very nice repairs that were "good enough" jobs. So I guess it depends on your situation.
