any hobbyist musicians here?
« on: January 02, 2012, 12:48:51 pm »
I made a home video this weekend of the dogs using the new version of iMovie.  It was fun and turned out great.  One thing that bothers me, though, is the background music.  I like my choice, but it's "stolen" so next time I make a video I want to use my own composition.  I did pull up Garageband to see if I could quickly cobble together my own music, but it looks like you have to play an actual instrument, so I got scared and closed it.   ;D

I love to listen to music, but I can't play an instrument to save my life.  Does anybody know if you can just pull together some pre-existing tracks to make a song in Garageband?  I mean, just browse rhythm tracks, melodies, etc and overlay them to see what the result is?

If you're curious, here is my video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sxz16r5Q_G4

There are sample libraries that you can buy that you can use forever I think but typically they charge $$ up front for them.  Probably don't want 'hardcore techno' but I know that Industrial Strength records offer this sort of thing.  There are also generic music for licensing or purchase for use via www.apmmusic.com.  I had to listen to that stuff and log it when I worked as a temp at "famous talk show" so that the artists got their royalties for useage in the program.

I want to set up a corner of my room with a chair and my video camera for recording my practices.  I've only wanted to do this for 20 years or so... I still have Cakewalk on my first computer that I bought in 1996 and half of a guitar synth system.  Feels like I'm not supposed to do anything fun until everything is organized and I have no obligations to anyone else... and I fear that when I finally have the guilt-free time to do things I will be physically incapable...

Also planned to build a vocal isolation booth for it's stated purpose and more likely - 'primal screaming' to vent my ongoing frustration with life in general.

PS.  Today's insomnia background track was "Far Beyond the Sun" by Yngwie Malmsteen.  Thought maybe 2012 is the year I finally master it.  I've only had the sheet music / tablature for 15-20 years...
