I think you are reading this wrong.  It appears to me that this shows the investments the people in Congress have made in various companies, not the reverse.

You are right, but you have to wonder how a congressdriod will vote on a bill that affects a company in which he has invested.

This is nothing new.
a. The first transcontinental railroad was built when the founders raised a lot of money and then spent it all on congress.
b. Even presidents have gotten into the act. L. Johnson routed projects so that land that his family owned was affected.
c. It used to be much more open than it is today. Senators used to be open about how much money they were receiving from banks, etc.
