I used to believe, and I guess I still do, that it's not ALL about the money.  But I've been smacked around enough, part of getting older, that I realize that usually only happens when there's no money pressure on the company.  Don't need to look any further than HP for proof of that.

It sounds like he meant that cross training only happens when the employer is rolling in funds.

If so I agree with that.

Pretty much.  Of course, when they aren't rolling in funds, admittedly, you do get cross training.  :)

At my last employer, when I was first hired in the 1990's they promised that we'd always have a quarterly incentive (so you'll make up your lower base pay), that they never had layoffs and other things.  When the economy went into free fall, no incentives, layoffs, furloughs, political infighting, etc.  Most companies aren't like SEMCO.  They don't become better places to work when times get rough.

Oops, just read David's post.  He made the same point and even quoted Machiavelli.
