Rural Sourcing Inc.
« on: August 01, 2017, 06:18:34 PM »
I heard about these guys just now on the radio: https://www.ruralsourcing.com/.

They outsource IT to "tier-2" cities within the U.S.:

https://www.ruralsourcing.com/what-we-do/

Quote
Rural Sourcing, Inc. was founded with the goal of connecting companies with talented, qualified IT professionals living in tier-2 cities across the United States. Over the last decade, we’ve bridged the gap between businesses and professionals living and working in communities across the country.

Because of these employment opportunities, communities are able to retain an educated and experienced workforce while businesses across the US are able to fill important needs and enjoy the benefits of an onshore team.

Unfortunately if you look at their Glassdoor reviews they only manage a 3.2/5 based on 65 reviews.  Which is worse than huge companies like Raytheon and Lockheed, which both have 3.7 ratings.

https://www.glassdoor.com/Overview/Working-at-Rural-Sourcing-EI_IE427192.11,25.htm

The main complaints seem to be low pay and advancement opportunities.   Might be more worthwhile, especially for a young person, to relocate somewhere where the big companies are as people seem to be about 16% more satisfied with them.

Be Prepared.

Thanks for the good information.

What you quoted here is pretty much what you'd expect. If one of this Rural Sourcing's selling points is pricing, then they operate just like any bork... just a quite different business model.

And of course you have limited career advancement potential. You're a townie in some Dayton or Harrisburg or Green Bay sized city and you wanted to stay in your personal comfort zone and stay close to high school friends so you hired into Rural Sourcing. You're a contractor, strike one, and all of the decision makers are located hundreds of miles from you, strike 2.

But it's a lifeline for experience workers as well as a starting point for locals.

I found their website.

They have QUITE a ways to go toward solving the problem of underemployment of technology professionals in the inner US. They have 27 current openings in:

Albuquerque, NM
Atlanta, GA
Augusta, GA
Jonesboro, AR
Mobile, AL

So... great concept but... yawwwn in reality for job seekers.

I remember reading about this venture a few years ago (if it's the same one).

Never met anyone hooked up with them though.

Maybe they are doing stuff but, a few years into this concept, they don't seem to have the traction or market share of the India body shops.

Pity! I like the idea.

^ Exactly. They don't have as many current openings as some braggart IT recruiters we've had on this forum in past years.

Super super small scale. Nothing much to see. Lots of opportunity for improvement and new ideas here.

Yeah, I agree.

Well... at least they have more employees than that Sea Code thing where they were going to have an old rusty 1970s cruise ship anchored 12 miles off California, staffed with desperate 3rd world slaves that couldn't make the H1B cut!

Sea Code was like something "Silicon Valley" would have come up with. I'm positive that stories like that inspired Mike Judge.

Yeah, I totally forgot about that shitty assed moronic scheme that probably violates UN regulations on human trafficking!

An IT slave ship! Arrh, ye walk the gangplank, matey, yer LOC is down this month!   >:D

It must have been dreamt up by some Elon Musk wanna be narcissist.

See Code is too funny!  That's probably my best laugh of the day. The web site is still around, but I don't know if they are still active.

My search also uncovered this:  http://www.codeonthesea.com/
Quote
Code on the Sea is a new kind of software engineering conference, focused on education while having a blast. We took an intensively educational conference, put it on a cruise ship, and the result is the most exciting way to learn hard, play hard.

Attend sessions from top speakers in the developer community. Workshop with others to solve your most challenging problems. Network throughout the cruise and meet friends for life.

You ruin a potentially nice vacation by doing some computer programming with the beautiful sea and sky in the background.  Instead of sitting by the pool and reading an interesting book you have somebody pull their chair up beside you to discuss the programming project you're supposed to be working on and the deliverable due that day.

It's kind of funny, I couldn't remember the name of that startup at all. I only read about it once when it came out, which turns out was 2005, 12 years ago. But I remembered in the back of my mind some hare-brained scheme to do this with old cruise ships and I just made up a plausible sounding name for the company when posting above because I didn't feel like trying to google up the real name. And it turns out that I actually did remember the exact name of something from reading one time an article 12 years ago.

Kind of like they asked Ken Jennings how he knew all that stuff to win Jeopardy and he said he didn't know all that stuff, he just hit the buzzer faster than anyone and then said the first thing that popped into his head and it was usually the right answer. There's all this info stored deep in our memory that we don't even know we know.

I still like the idea that sea-code isn't viable because it violates international standards on human trafficking.

It's one of those things when you thought you've seen everything (In IT, anyway). They don't hit the bottom of the barrel, they punched a hole in it.

Excellent one, Unix.  :D
