These executives are going to find a very hostile environment to peddle their bullshit. I know that the politicos in D.C. are getting hammered by grassroots.

Here's another relevant article in CNN:

Unbelievable is right!

(Bill) Gates, in testimony before Congress, has called for the current cap to be eliminated and 180,000 visas to be issued, saying the visa restrictions are driving away the worlds best and brightest precisely when we need them most. According to Gates, many U.S. competitors hire the qualified professionals we turn away. One third of Microsofts current domestic workforce consists of foreigners.

Gates is an anti-American piece of crap. I think it's interesting the way the folks on this forum are such died-in-the-wool M$ cheerleaders.

Maybe I overstated.

MANY folks on this site are died-in-the-wool M$ cheerleaders.

Better?

No,  he is not.   "anti-American" implies that he is doing things with the express intent of hurting America and Americans. Osama Bin Laden and his cohorts are anti-American.

Gates is pro-Gates, first, last and always.  I don't think he considers for a moment the impact his decisions have on the country that gave him the means and opportunity to become the richest man on Earth.

Okay, then he's the most self-centered, greedy, dense piece of crap. His greediness goes far beyond the norms of capitalism.

He hires vast numbers of non-Americans with no knowledge of their country of origin. (He probably thinks that they're all Americans.)

Somehow, my reading of this forum is slightly anti-M$.

Look at the usernames of our frequents. In regular expression and case independant, anybody with a name of *unix*, *oracle*, *java* has to be anti-M$, right? Also, guys talk about Digital stuff (good stuff) have to be anti-M$.

Me? my first computer was an Amdahl, then CDC, then commodore 64. Yeah, I am anti-M$, but only on a very mild scale. After all, most my development work nowadays is done on window based systems, and we even started to deploy on them.

Katyt,

It comes as a great surprise to me, too, that OpenITforum is a pack of cheerleaders for MS.  That's not the impression I've gotten, since 2003  (has it really been that long?).

As for me,  I'm more impressed by Bill Gates' business acumen than by his technical leadership.

He's right up there as a programmer.  Being able to build a BASIC interpreter for the Intel chip straight out of high school is not all that shabby.  But I don't put him in a league with Knuth or Wirth, or the folks at Dartmouth who invented BASIC, or the folks who built Multics, or the Internet, or the office of the future at Xerox PARC.

Gates as a purely technical contributor would not have made himself the richest man in the world.  It was business decisions that got him there.  Plus being in the right place at the right time.

I hope you are right, but I fear you are wrong.

I've been watching the peddling of the H-1B prgram in Washington since about 1992.  It's been one of the most successful lobbying efforts ever mounted.

Until about 2002,  many congressmen had never, ever even HEARD the argument against H-1B.  They had heard the argument for H-1B dozens of times.

When H-1B came up for renewal in the late 1990s,  there was only one senator who voted against it:  Fritz Hollings.
Liberal democrats were nowhere to be seen on this one.

Now we are finally getting some traction.  But years of inertia are going to be hard to overcome.

Actually,  MS was about four years behind companies like Oracle and Sun when it came to massive offshoring to India.

And at least MS is trying to get the number of green cards increased,  rather than relying on H-1B,  which is worse than green cards.

Would you then explain the Gates Foundation's gifts to charity and to end disease in the world as merely some way to make himself richer, and not an expression of any real caring?

Probably so, since that would make your explanation of him and his motives consistent....right?

(I realize that by saying anything positive about Gates, I now flip, binary-style, to a staunch Gates apologist and fan boy)  :\

I'm with you on this one, JM.  In spite of SQLplus's characterization of me as a black-and-white person,  I see this one as a lot of shades of grey.

If only the US labor market had some skills/intelligence/talent. (At A Price We're Willing To Pay) But since it doesn't, let's stop looking in America.

Yeah, Gates and his ilk are real princes.
