One critical aspect is: Who do you want to work for? If you want to work for major corporations, then you need to go the Oracle, DB2 route. If you want to work for smaller organizations, then SQL Server is the way to go. MySQL _was_ the way for startups and ISV's, but with the new pricing out there, SQL Server and competitors are real options.
