Had lunch with some former corporate team members from the old FTE/contract days on a lark. What a different world, they seem to be cruising along with barely a care in the world. Well, their complaints did not seem all that big to me anyway. I was surprised to see that over the past couple of years their load had actually lightened. No more 24 hour support, they do days (including weekends) India does nights. They did not appear to be in constant death march mode. They even can work from home, I guess if it can be done from India it can finally also be done from the burbs.
Two different worlds for the corporate folks out there these days. I have been doing some periodic volunteer work with h@bit@t for hum@ity for over the past year and beyond the families they build for/with I see many volunteers that are former corporate people that have been out of work for the loooong haul now. What a sharp contrast, the folks still working seem totally oblivious to what is really happening out there! Human nature I guess.
Of course, then there are those of us hacking our way through the jungle. The ones that have gone rogue! Let's see, I heard how I might have a hard time ever going back to a corporate environment because "I was used to calling the shots". In my mind I am thinking, ah yes, risk/reward that sharp two-edged sword we dance with every day. The other good one was that I probably only had to work a couple more years away, as B!ll C0sby would say "Riiiiiiiight". Nice thought.
The kicker, they had some senior lead slots coming open and wanted to know if I would be interested in coming on board as an FTE. Seriously. Good salary, benefits, twenty minutes from home. The plot thickens...
