Come back to dot gov?
« on: September 21, 2011, 06:25:34 pm »

After the outsourcing agency was replaced at the dot gov I was at earlier this year, the same bork calls me back and says there is an open position at the same client, similar to what I had before. (I left that dot gov position for minor raise with a client in the hotel industry and it was an utter disaster)

The insisted on 50/hour but since I already have a gig, I pushed for and eventually got 60/hour. One reason for that is, you need an active clearance which I have.  Then converting to FTE at 115-118K - but we all know it's still a contract.

My current gig is work-from-home and it's mostly OK except that the project manager has unrealistic expectations and they do expect you to work at all hours of the day and night. It's at 59/hour, with 45/hours min and overtime.  I don't have the confidence they will keep me long-term and would not be surprised if they canned me this year, if they decide I am not jumping through their hoops fast enough, which I am not.  OTOH, they may renew the contract next year.

Thoughts on  jumping to the new gig or staying?

I guess if you liked (relatively speaking, of course) the culture at the .gov job and don't like the new job with the unrealistic deadlines, I'd seriously consider going back.  There's always the question of what are you learning, too.  If the current job has got a lot of pressure, but you're learning something marketable, then that would be a plus for the current job.

I have doubts I can learn much at either place, however the edge goes to the dot-gov.
Currently I am doing EDIFECS software installs  and such at all hours of the day.
Doing the WFH thing is nice but wonder how long it will last.

I am trying to think about the next 5 years versus the next few months.  These are totally different gigs and different directions.   There is probably more stability with the dot-gov, especially now that they won a new contract with the outsourcing agency.

A FTF meeting with the new possibility couldn't hurt.
