The Political Sections Are Closed For Now!
« on: September 10, 2009, 11:37:54 pm »
I finally did it.

The content is still there, but only admins (both of us) can get at it. I removed everyone from access to the Politics and Values and BoF sections. Maybe in the future I will restore public access to these places, but for now, this feels like the right thing to do.

Here is my reasoning. You may not agree personally, but I finally decided that things had run their course and the past had repeated itself enough times, to make a sound decision.
  • Virtually every thread for the last couple of months has resulted in trolling.
  • There is no real discussion beyond sniping in these sections.
  • There was a lot of "right to left" trolling but also a small amount of left to right trolling.
  • The most vocal board personalities have learned each other's positions to a degree that the tone of all responses are anticipated and automatically   discounted.
  • There's always, continually, this element of "being corrected".
The point is: there's just no discussion happening on the politics sections when threads run their course. It's all back and forth sniping.

This is quite different from Janet's closing of the off topic sections on Realrates. She did this because the activity was reaching a fever pitch. Whereas even with very low posting activity, the mood here on the political sections has become toxic and the political garbage has become a rallying point for individuals to score points and to engage in passive aggressive bullshit and to argue with each other.

(rant deleted - thought better of it)

The commentary and explanations by vital, engaged professionals who are actively working in today's industry are always welcome here.  I always enjoy the participation of (among others): Slinky, David Randolph, Dennis Nedry, Pxsant, ID Shukov, Peter Coderight, JBucks, and several others, the majority of whom are here to discuss meat and potatos career, professional and technical topics.

I'm not "anointing" certain people - but it's become evident to me who is out in the world with skin in the game in the IT field - and who is simply idle, and kibitzing and throwing hot air and bullshit, and lurking with constant smartass comments. The "problem" is, the political sections throw that distinction into sharp relief.

One final thing. I DESPISED the tone of the political section lately. Absolutely hated it. I could not be proud of this board in any way with that kind of crap going on.

So will closing these sections kill off the board? I couldn't care less if it does. I will not run a place where people come just to argue and to bitch at each other.

And, JTGalt, just to counter your inevitable snark - I don't believe that this will "transfer energy" to other sections. The people who are actually worth reading pretty much stayed out of the politics when it became ugly. All I intend to do is dry up a crappy set of discussions that go nowhere.

I have no idea what will actually happen. Maybe a sigh of collective relief. Maybe a collective "FU" directed at me personally. Don't care.

A few more notes
« Reply #2 on: September 11, 2009, 12:01:49 pm »
Thanks, Tom.

In the recent past I have isolated individuals by removing their access to the politics. As time passed, I realized that there were enough people involved that I realized that just one person wasn't creating the ill will - the negativity had become the defining chemistry of the place. And I had no stomach for targeting several people. That doesn't really work in the long term. It's unpleasant and I am sick of doing it.

This closure may or may not be "forever". I decided that a "reboot" was a good idea. The politics section has gotten stale. The same people always use it. And lately, discussions have become short, tenses and combative. With no ideas being expressed that don't get immediately discounted.

The people who seem to be strong in terms of professional or tech discussions have tended to avoid the politics section lately. That alone tells me a lot. It tells me that the busy people whom I want to read don't allocate any time to it or avoid it entirely.

So, for now, no net loss.

I was tempted to post a "Now, children..."

I think you did the right thing.

I've been noticeably absent (due to work requirements) for many months, but do try to do a "drive by" and keep up with what's going on here.

The last several times I looked in on the "political" sections, I was appalled at the blatant sniping (even worse than what was going on against the former President).

My only concerns about this route is that the "arguers" will take their topics (fights) into the other sections - increasing the admin / workload to keep them down / out.

It doesn't work too well when the targets of this message are 65+ retirees.

So we move from political sniping to ageism. Now that's an improvement.

I respect quite a few people here who are not spring chickens. The difference is that the ones that I respect a) usually have something constructive to say and b) don't tear down the other person or person's thinking. It's really pretty simple.

I hope the removal of political section will improve the professionalism of the board and eliminate personalistic sniping.  Good call, IMHO.

So far...

It's been closed for 11 days, given my original posting date of this announcement.

There has actually been an upsurge of posting in the rest of the sections.

My strong opinion is that most people on this board were ready to see the politics section close. When the off topic sections of Realrate's board were closed, nobody was ready for it.

So I had one member here rubbing my nose in the similarity of the action but IMO that comparison doesn't wash.

There might be a minority here that miss it, but the unpleasantness that occurred on that section made it not worth retaining it.
