While our Grand Puba recovers from his great effort, have a look around and check out our new digs.  ;D

Migrating a web site is a huge under taking. I have done it and it can be ugly ;) .

I thak the Grand Puba for all his hard work!

Please. As any member of the Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes knows, it is spelled "Grand Poobah". ;)

it is spelled "Grand Poobah".

Per The Flintstones, you're correct. I took my cue from Google where the "Puba" version actually has 40,000 more hits. Just goes to show you that more people have it wrong than right. I stand corrected.

" Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes "

You gotta wonder whether the Flintstones writers were taking a bit of a swipe at Lodges being a Neaderthal institution in the 20th century, because if you take the initials, you get LOWB, which is suggestive of "low-brow".

Could be, but fraternal orders have been staple in comedies forever.  It gives the talent and excuse to dress in funny costumes and act foolish.

The Flintstones was inspired by "The Honeymooners.".  Ralph and Norton were members of the Raccoon Lodge and their leader was the "Grand High Exhalted Mystic Ruler."   Amos and Andy were in the  "The Mystic Knights of the Sea Lodge" and Laurel and Hardy were "Sons of the Desert".

Probably originally it owed something of a copycat nature to the Freemasons.

They tell the story about the British banker who goes to gaol.  There, this huge career crim challenges him to an arm-wrestling competition.  As they claps hands, the huge dude suddenly looks extremely surprised and his arm is thrust to the table by the banker effortlessly.  As the banker walks away, his cell-mate says "He LET you win?", to which the banker replies "He had to.  I outrank him.  Useful things, Masonic handshakes."
